What if right now, you were given superpowers? What would you do? Would you immediately fight for good, or just mess around as you work out your life? Chronicle tells the story of three high-schoolers, who find themselves in this predicament. As they grow more and more powerful, things start getting out of control. The story is well told through the eyes of Andrew, one of the three who has been picked on all his life, and is abused several times throughout the movie. He uses a handheld camera to tell the story, and throughout the movie, he begins to realise that if he needs to, he can do almost anything. He of the three friends grows much darker and starts using his power for personal revenge or gain.
The story and plot were well told, though I thought the end really let the story down. The characters were really well developed throughout, especially Andrew. Personally, I think he was the only character really likeable during the majority of the movie, probably because he is the one who really wants to do something with his power.
The effects were well done, and my favourite piece of effects was near the beginning of the movie, when the three guys find a strange artefact (or something). This was really good, as the camera began pixelating and only showed flashes of what was happening. They also held up well during the fight scenes, when a LOT of stuff gets destroyed/mangled/generally ripped up.
The acting was really good, with its young talented cast, who are really able to portray the average teenager. The script was quick and smart and often amusing, which kept me interested for most of the movie.
I found that all I was really disappointed with was the length. Running for less than an hour and a half, I felt the movie could have been expanded a lot more. Perhaps some more about the characters prior to the events of the movie, or just more scenes in which they show off their powers.
Overall, I would give Chronicle a 3 and a half out of 5 stars, lifted up with its' original ideas but let down with its' length. I would also recommend it for people around 12 and up, as some of the scenes are extremely violent.
