Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

My old teacher used to always tell me two things when writing a story. One was to get into the plot early and leave early, because no one wants to wait and wait for something to happen at the start and end of the story. People want something interesting and they want it straight away. The second point goes with the first and it is to grab the viewers attention straight from the get go. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy failed to do both of those things. I wasn't sure what to expect going into the movie and then during the movie I wasn't sure what to expect either. The movie is based in the early 1970’s and follows the retired intelligent expert, Smiley as he is in charge of discovering the Russian mole in “The Circus”, which is the highest level of the British Intelligence Service. The film took an excruciatingly slow pace and the lack of dialogue and music made it quite difficult to watch. I became confused with the plot at the beginning because nothing was really set down as to what was happening. The shots were cutting and jumping around all over the place to leave me wondering when the story was going to start getting interesting and crank up a gear. Unfortunately for me the story never did crank up. Throughout the whole movie it stayed chugging along at its slow paced rate. The speed of the film reminded me of what it would of been like in the secret service back in the 70’s with no high speed internet or top secret gadgets to speed up the operations. Everything would of been a bit more chilled out and everything would of taken a slower pace so I think it was part of the reason the film was at the speed it was. So now moving on to some slightly more technical points. The camera work was exceptionally well done and the wide variety of shots were much more interesting then the standard cutting and panning. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy lacked dialogue and music as I said before. If it had more then I'm sure it would of been much easier to follow and much more interesting watch. I am going to give Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a 2 out of 5 purely because it was too slow, very confusing and there was lots of room for improvement
