Good Will Hunting - The First Trojan Horse?

When the words Good Will Hunting are mentioned, it always reminds me of two things. One - Step Brothers, when Brendan and Dale are in the job interview and one of them rips off the storyline of Good Will Hunting to try and impress the boss. The second is in the lyrics of Jay-Z song when those words are mentioned. So yeah, that's all that movie has ever meant to me until I sat down and watched for myself.
I like lots of different movies. Its easy to sit down at laugh along to a comedy or to be blown away with big fights and stunts in an action packed title. But the movies that really mean something to me are the ones that leave me wanting more, ones that leave me actually sitting and thinking about myself based on what I had just taken in. Good Will Hunting is one of those movies. This 1997 Drama film is set in Boston and features Robin Williams as Sean Macguire and Matt Damon as Will Hunting.
It centers around Will Hunting, a 20 year old orphan who has grown up in the tough neighborhood of South Boston. Will has a special talent for mathematics and reading, but as he can't afford college, so he is left buying hand-me-down textbooks that he takes in and memorizes. While working as a janitor at MIT (an American university) he cant help but to solve some of the challenging maths theorems on the hallway blackboards that have been left there by the lecturers. However away form work, Will's violent attitude towards life rewards him with jail time. The professor who discovers Will's hidden genius for maths manages to get him out of the slammer as long as he takes some counseling. Will manages to use his cocky and sarcastic attitude to make all but one counselor stop working with him. Will meets a girl and as they start to date he struggles to become close with her and at the same time Sean Maguire, the stubborn counsellor manages to tap into Will's inner self and troubled past, which is when the magic starts to happen.
While I was watching this movie it took a while to get past the constant swearing and the occasional sexual reference. But while I was watching it, I took the whole thing as one great movie. Despite my earlier re It was fantastic. The combination of the music teamed up with a very powerful dialogue and strong acting made for a film that hit your emotions at full force. Good Will Hunting is a timeless movie -it doesn't need to stay fixed in a certain point in history so it doesn't matter who you are or what type of person you are, it always makes you think and wonder, challenging your thoughts.
I am going to give Good Will Hunting a 4 out of 5. Now I’m sure there’s some of you wondering. “Hey! You said this movie is amazing! Where is that one extra mark!?”. The answer to that is that as the story progressed and more and more emotions poured out of the characters, the plot and story of Will being the maths genius was mostly forgotten. Good Will Hunting really is a Trojan Horse in itself. It's mostly thought of as an old movie you've heard of, once or twice. But once you give it the time of day it really is something different. Its more then just the movie - its the whole atmosphere the movie puts you in. A great classic that should still be seen, despite its' age.
